Serangoon Garden Food Centre
-55 Serangoon Garden Way

Made a trip down here specially for Teppan Cuisine which sells teppanyaki set meals. was extremely disappointed to realise that they were closed. Nevertheless, i still chose to stay on instead of eating at chomp chomp... the place here is much more airy and less crowded.

302 Newton Circus Chao Guo Tiao
Stall #46
Highly rated on Makansutra with a full marks review, this was actually a famous stall located at Newton Circus in the 80s. Just a few years back, it would take you at least 30 minutes to get your order taken but the demand for this seem to have dropped. I remember i once queued about 1 hour for this! Now,the long queue have disappeared and i got my plate of Char Kway Teow in less than 10 minutes. Available in $2/3/4.

Fried Kway Teow ($2)

Presentation-wise its looks pretty bad, but after mouthfuls of it,i could tell that this was no ordinary char kway teow. The sauce was not oversweet and the chilli was strong enough. A mild "wok hei" can be tasted from the kwayteow(which was good with crunchy beansprouts), but it was just a little too dry. The small plate came with only 1 cockle, with no chinese sausages nor lard bits found.

Nuradi Satay
Stall #26
Featured on Makan Places Lost & Found, this satay stall formerly from Taman Serasi is popular in the area. Three choices: chicken, beef or mutton at 40cents/stick (Min order of 10 sticks). They also had gado gado and other malay dishes.

Chicken Satay, with Ketupat Rice ($4.40)

10 freshly grilled satays, with condiments like raw onions and cucumbers and a bowl of warm chunky gravy.

Just look at that beautiful light brown colour! The satays were so perfectly grilled, with hardly any burnt portions. The meat, completely well-marinated, is sharply sweet and flavourful. Quite surprising how the meat can actually be so tender and shiok with every bite. Thumbs up!

Ah Liang Barbeque Seafood (Corner stall)
Business was kind of bad for them. But hello? Who wouldn't choose to go for Chomp Chomp for the famous seafood barbeque instead? oops.

Sambal Sotong ($7)

It cost us $7 for a rather small portion.

The squid was not fresh and became very mushy as you chew it. The sambal paste was alright, but a tad too spicy for me. Fine, it would be much wiser to have this at Chomp Chomp instead.

Shukor Stall Makanan Istimewa
Stall #30
The father of the owner here is noted for popularising Roti John in Singapore. Naturally, my expectations would be set much higher as i was hoping for a good first roti john experience.

Chicken Roti John ($3.50)

We opted for a chicken one, which the difference was simply just additional minced chicken in the egg. Two words; damn disappointing. The french loaf came hard and cold, while the filling did not impress at all. I guess they no longer bother to live up to their name as a 'founder' anymore, since there are now plenty of better ones out there.

PK Xpress
Although they specialise in Fish & Chips, they also sold a range of fresh-made cakes and desserts. I just couldn't resist to after-meal desserts. lol.

Apple Pie ($1.50)

Cheap; this was like the first word i could think of. The next would probably be neat. I liked the filling because of the not-too-sweet & juicy apples, but there were no traces of cinnamon tasted. Over baked, the over-fine pie crust tasted more like cookie than a pie. The base was also too soft and the entire thing just lacked the melt-in-the-mouth effect. okay, but i can't expect much from a $1.50 foodcentre dessert slice ya.

Overall: Impressive satay from Nuradi Stall and above-average Char Kway Teow. Plus, these are just a small part of the food centre. Definitely more to be discovered, and i will be back for my Teppan Cuisine.
