Thasevi Food
famous jalan kayu prata restaurant
-237 & 239 Jalan Kayu

It was just a random decision to try their famous pratas for brunch. But in the end, the huge crowd changed our brunch into lunch. We had to wait around for seats like how we do in hawker centres, and that took 15 minutes. The worst part was the 45 minute waiting time for our food to be served. Yea, and my mum was like as fed up as ever when the food came.

Yes, it was sure popular, as it was one of the first few well-known prata places in Singapore. However, i'm sad to say that they have failed to keep up their standards as the best prata specialist.

Plain Prata ($0.70)

The standard order for most people. It was a good prata, but nothing fantastic.

Mushroom Prata ($4)

This is like expensive, and was kind of disappointing, It was comparatively bigger in size; equivalent to a portion of 2 and a half plain pratas. Breaking it apart, a whole load of sliced button mushrooms were revealed. The prata was slightly soft and dense.

But the whole thing was totally tasteless, and i got a little sick of it while i'm only halfway through eating. Furthermore, it made me feel really full after finishing it.

Paper Prata ($1.50)

Much thinner than a normal prata, it was slightly crispier but still maintaining some malleability.

Tissue Prata ($4)

Shaped like a cone, this was a level thinner and larger in size than the paper prata. Certainly more crispy as well, but the sides still remained soft. It was good and less filling.

Garlic Prata ($2)

I didn't try this but it seems rather greasy to me.

Curry ($1)

It tastes alright, with a special spice flavour. It was watery but goes well with their bland pratas.

During our long wait, we got some otahs from a shop nearby. You could actually notice that most customers had otahs and Selegie soyabean curd before their orders arrived despite the visible sign that read " No outside food & drinks allowed"

Otah (3 for $1)

Cheaper than the usual otahs, but the portion is really little. I didnt really like it, as it was flat and not spicy enough for me. But still, its a good thing to have when you get totally famished from the wait.

Overall: I felt that this place was rather overrated, with not-so-fantastic food and poor service. It was certainly not the best prata place around, unlike what it claimed to be, and i cannot understand the presence of the constant crowd. For the long wait and expensive prices (for some), the food was just not worth the time and money. One good thing to mention is that they are open 24hours, but actually many other prata shops around also offers this.
