Lao Di Fang Scissor Cut Curry Rice
unusually thick curry

Good food is not necessarily only found in well-pakaged & furnished eateries. In fact, the more unpretentiously looking it is, the more it could be a possible hidden gem. This is proven by a run-down and gloomy-looking corner coffeeshop along the busy Jalan Besar Road.

The only attention-attracting factor could only be their popularity. Long queues build up especially during dinner time and sometimes stretches out of the shop space. Luckily, the wait was minimised by a quick and straighforward ordering system- simply select the dishes and pay at the cashier.
Only a few dishes are offered, including chicken & pork chop, fried egg, fishcake, loh bak, beansprouts, longbeans and curry chicken. The notable thing about them here is the generous drench of curry & braised(lu zhi) gravy on every plate of rice. Oh yes, the food is also specially cut into bite-sized pieces using a pair of traditional scissors.
My rice with beansprouts & chicken chop ($2.20);

I went for only 2 dishes- Although simple, yet special.
The chicken chop looked so nicely battered with sesame seeds. Good batter to chicken meat ratio, making it good to savour the solid crisp layer of crumb and the tenderness of the cutlet. Crunchy beansprouts were well-cooked and fully removed of the undesirable raw taste.
Here's another plate..

loaded with porkchop, lohbak, beansprouts and a prawn fritter. Plus extra curry gravy!
Their curry was the thickest one i've seen! It was a very palatable version that went well with the lu zhi, creating a nice mix of flavour. However, their porkchops were too soft and soggy, with a overthick batter and pathetically thin meat.
Overall: Very very unpretentious and heartwarming food. Pricing was cheap as well, but all it lacks is the dining ambience. A good supper haunt though; they are open til 3.30am.
