Azabu Sabo
japanese sweets, eats & tea

If you frequent Marina Square often enough, you would have notice two highly-competitive Japanese Restaurants. A similar menu offers both common Japanese fare as well as the more popular japanese gelato desserts, making it hard for decision-making.

Azabu Sabo seems to be taking the invisible upperhand; being more prominently located since they were the first to start operation. Their tantalising display of food models outside the restuarant was also proved to be another smart crowd-drawing tactic. However, what brought me in here was their new Journey to Japan Ramen series- it sure looked pretty promising.

Hokkaido Scallop Ramen ($13.90)

I was glad to see the major resemblence of the real thing to its photo, featuring 2 half-shell scallops and a handful of mini scallops in shitake omelette. The soup mild-tasting soup went quite well for me with the enhancement of the sweet omelette batter. Ramen-wise wasn't too bad; the common eggy kind cooked soft.

Tokyo Shoyu Cha Siew Ramen ($11.90)

Being a shoyu base, the soup was undeniably tastier but the char siew could have been leaner.

Unagi Kabayaki ($10)

Also ventured into trying out their ala carte side dish of my favourite unagi fish. The portion was small, accompanied with some shabbily cold tamago. A unique taste first struck me, there was this distinct crisp coating layer that tasted different from elsewhere. However, this was not well brought-out by the thin and far from tender fish meat.

Green Tea Soft-serve with Sweet Potato ($6)

I was taken aback by the unacceptable form of presentation- the softserve was clearly slanted and already partially melted. And then a bite of it didn't dazzle at all. I believe this is made of hokkaido milk but it turned out to be as average tasting as Mcdonald's vanilla cone (just a tad more supreme).

Resembling a donut-ring, their baked sweet potato came with a terrible thick skin batter. The interior was so rough and dry that i actually got sick of it just after 2 mouthfuls- undoubtely no match for their competitor. Ministry of Food's Matcha Imo was a million times more divine than this.

My next complain would have to be their poor service. I admit the food was served rather quickly but i couldn't stomach the inefficiency in tea-refilling. The waitress gave me stern glares whenever i requested for more tea, but aren't they putting a strong emphasis on promoting their signature tea?

Skip this and head straight to Ministry of Food at the centre-stage, you wouldn't regret it.
