Bai Xian Seafood Restaurant
simply a $4.80 fad

The stalls of the supposed food street along Upper Serangoon Road don't seem to last in operation. In fact, the closing down and re-opening of new businesses became so periodical that i don't bother to take special notice of them anymore. Until one day, i happen to spot a queue.

This most recent sprout-out took over two shop spaces (very adventurous of them), one with airconditioning and one without. I must say they are pretty smart to come up with a promotional list of $4.80 dishes, boasting of a decent seafood variety. Going by the kiasu-ism of Singaporeans, resisting such an seemingly unbelivable offer is almost impossible.

So after a casual recommendation from her colleagues, mum decided to bring my sis and i there for dinner. True enough, a worthy menu was presented with all selections going at just $4.80. Credibilty proven, but how about the food?

Steamed Live Red Tilapia in Hong Kong Style

I'm so relieved that we ordered this; its probably the only passable dish of our entire meal. I liked how the fish came fresh and soft in a pleasantly sweet gravy. Just one grouse- the presence of many fine bones.

Tofu with Seafood in Claypot

I wonder why the claypot turned out to be a pathetic metal bowl, but i'll forgive that for the sake of the generous portion. 6 tofu slabs, mushrooms, fish, prawns and squids pieces looking good but awfully weak in taste. The tofu was bland, mushrooms were sour, seafood far from fresh, and gravy diluted and tasteless. One failure dish.

BBQ Cuttlefish

Although this stir-fried squid pieces and ladysfinger wasn't that bad in taste, i couldn't stand how it came utterly clogged with the sambal chilli oil.

Braised Sea Cucumber in claypot

Slightly thicker and tastier sauce compared to the tofu but still another mediocre dish.

A good $4.80 deal? No way, absolutely not worth it for their neither fresh nor good-tasting seafood. To further worsen the experience, atrociously unacceptable service was shown from the table-clearer and cashier.

I'm pretty sure this $4.80 fad will not last for long.
