Ramen Marutama
the new ramen legend

The Central- a new japanese mall that emerged after the opening of the korean Square 2. On a recent trip there, a perpetually long queue caught my eye. Realising its the highly-recommended ramen stall by Chubby Hubby, i mentioned it to dad and we decided to join the queue to judge it for ourselves.

Indeed, the queue was like what i would expect on a friday night. The pretty small shop area meant a 30 minute wait before we managed to get seated. Following that, some fluent japanese language from their chefs and the head waiter left me in high expectations of their food.

Dashimaki Tamago ($8)

This side dish which kick-started our meal was sure a promising one. 6 warm steaming cubes of rolled egg omelette came neatly presented on a large white plate. Amazingly soft, moist and packed with a sweetness from the dashi stock; these delicious pieces didn't take dad and i very long to clear it all up.

Marutama Tamago Ra-men ($13)

I went for their classic Marutama Ra-men with an entire seasoned egg. A safe choice with all the staple accompaniments- charsiew, a small portion of Aosa seaweed, as well as spring onions. What struck me most was how the noodles here differed from most japanese ramen.

The ramen here, cooked soft and smooth, wasn't bad but neither impressive. Surprisingly, these thin strands in chicken stock was really akin to our chinese version of La Mian. More outstanding things i felt, was instead the Ajitsuke tamago and the tasty soup. A fragile and tender whole egg came incredibly seasoned with a full shoyu flavour. It was so good that dad finds it too cheap for just $1.

Char Siu Iri Ra-men ($16)

Mum had a meaty choice with 4 slabs of commendable charsiew; Well-marinated with the perfect proportion of fats lined in between.

Aosa Iri Ra-men ($16, additional $1 for ajitsuke tamago)

Dad's one was fully loaded with seaweed. Not the usual kind of processed seaweed sheet but instead fresh soft ones given. But quality stuff sure comes with a hefty price tag- $4 for a clump of seaweed is rather ridiculous.

To be honest, i am not full of praise for their ramen. With many other more worthy competitors around, a revisit would definitely not come too soon- especially with the current mad queues.

Just as we were leaving, we noticed the staff was putting up a signboard at the end of the queue. Sold out, it says. And that's how popular they are.
