HK Kim Gary Restaurant

Kim Gary- a recent expansion of a Hong Kong-Malaysia restaurant chain into our local market. Located in the bustling Vivocity, a noisy and lively ambience sets in this new hongkong cafe sprout-out. I have heard much of their poor service here and true enough, 2 extremes were met- one extremely friendly and attentive waitress, while another with a terribly grouchy attitude.

the menu

A self-ordering system takes place by filling up the sheets of menu forms. Efficiency here is really commendable- the first dish was served just minutes after our submission!

French Toast ($2.80)

Their version was more on the wet side, being entirely soaked with syrup and melted butter. It may seem like one cloying slab but it turned out to be pretty good.

Although the two egg-battered toasts were lacking in a crispy exterior, it still managed to score tastewise. A light sweetness and syrup flavour first spreads in, followed by a creamy ooze from its peanut butter centre. Good balance achieved.

Wrapped Fish in Egg with Shanghai Style Vegetable Rice ($7.90)

The generous portion of rice went well for me. Mildy flavoured with egg, veggie bits and a brown sauce, it was a good change from the boring white rice. The fish fillet was really thin but innovatively made delectable by the egg coating. Nice addition of corn bits as well.

Fried Pork Chop with Chinese Mushroom Rice ($7.50)

This other variation of rice came more flavourful with fragrantly-seasoned mushrooms. Pork chop not too bad; on the lean side and reasonably tasty.

As for the drinks... Traces of powdery bits within my almond tea made it so obvious of its instant-mix origin. Hard to go wrong with such pre-packed stuffs except the overload of sugar. The order of "Yin Yong" with 2 visible layers of coffee and tea came in a surprisingly huge portion!

Cold "Yin Yong" in Hong Kong Style ($2) & Cold Almond Tea ($2)

The food here are all simple standard fare (like those that can be easily prepared at home) but they happen to suit my liking. Dishes were generally satisfying with sufficient taste and reasonable pricing. In terms of value and food, i would say this is one of the better hk cafes around.
