Techno Edge Canteen @ NUS

My sister have been raving all about the food at her faculty's canteen, especially her favourite indonesian BBQ rice stall- claimed to be even better than Riverside at PS foodcourt (imagine that!). Taking the rare opportunity of an early school dismissal on "eat with your family" day, i got her to take me there for lunch.

It was very crowded during the lunch hour with the place packed with people. Since queues are reliable popularity indicators, i headed straight behind the longest one.

Japanese Kitchen

Attracting the most crowd was a busy japanese stall with an appealing signboard menu. An array of choices was available and furthermore at wowing cheap prices (a bowl of unagi rice only cost $3.90!) An efficient system is carried out here, where your orders are taken beforehand and cooked on the spot. Once its your turn, you simply grab a tray to collect your food and make payment.

Salmon Don ($3.50)

Full marks for presentation; a nicely pink salmon fillet laid on a bed of steamed rice, topped with teriyaki sauce, pickles, spring onions, sesame, as well as a spoonful of crispy tempura flakes. Alongside came a bowl of miso soup.

Nothing to rave about the soup, but i was certainly taken in by the salmon don. Simply the rice was delicious enough- a drizzle of sweet sauce plus the crunchy batter bits were excellent touches to complement it. The salmon had to be the softest i've tried; it was silky, wholesomely lined with fats that almost melts in the mouth. Some would find it oversoft, but i liked it this way.

Sis, without a doubt, bought a plate of indonesian rice. Already bearing high hopes of it, I gladly agreed to share it with her.

Grilled Chicken with Fish Fillet Set ($3.60)

However, this didn't score too well for me. I was taken aback by the atrociously measly amount of fish under that breaded coating; the curry was overempowering in a wrong way and the egg was as thin as a piece of cloth. Only that huge chicken managed to excite- moist tender and tasty on the inside. Added veggie for an extra cost of $0.50 but this greasy clump looked just like those in typical vegetarian stalls. Sauce was pretty much similar to Riverside's but the presentation and other aspects failed in comparison.

Yes, the price is an attractive factor here, but they are still no match for Riverside.

Indonesian Panggang

These cheap campus fare are really enjoyable; light on the pockets and still good to eat. I will be back- just for the japanese food! (:
