The Cheesecake Cafe
Absolutely fabulous cheesecakes.
- 685 East Coast Road

Situated in a corner of a row of restaurants along East Coast Road, it sure was easy to be missed. Observance is all it takes you to the best cheesecakes (: A food blogger once said that you can forget about n.y.d.c once you tried this, and so i was determined to check the place out.

Stepping in, i was first greeted by an array of tempting cheesecakes in the refrigerator display. one day, i'd try every single one of these!

Next to fascinate me was the ambience and decos. Much efforts can be seen in creating the warm and cosy atmosphere, with very elegant european-styled furnishing.

An innovative idea to use a cd-rom casing as the menu.

The highlight here is obviously their cheesecakes, as revealed from their name. However, they do serve some finger foods and spaghettis(just 2 types) as well. A whole range of hot & cold beverages are also available to go with your cheesecakes.

We ordered 3 cheesecakes and then settled on the comfy sofa seats to enjoy them;

Peach Jelly Cheesecake ($6.90)

This is one of their house specials, and has been featured on many newspaper and magazine articles. Costing slightly more than the normal Peach Cheesecake, the only difference was a layer of peach-flavoured jelly in the middle. Light and zesty, plus the jelly adds more delight to every bite.

Strawberry Oreo Cheesecake ($6.20)

Similar to Secret Recipe's, but with an oreo chunk and an oreo base to add more bliss. The base was too soft for me, not offering any crunch. BUT, the cheesecake was heavenly! Light but firm in texture throughout, with a mild cheese & strawberry fragrance. Whats best, it doesnt give any sweetness overkill. simply sinnful but indulging~

Walnut Cheesecake ($6.20)

Something chunkier, with pieces of crunchy walnuts within the smooth cheese. The cheese taste was just right, not too strong, and doesnt make you feel sick of it at all. Its a wonder how it can achieve such a great dense texture.

Overall: yes, i must agree that these are like the best cheesecakes i have tasted so far. Everything was satisfactory; service, food, ambience, pricing. The only letdown was that we spotted a tiny cockroach, but it was efficiently removed by the staff. Nothing will affect my decision to come back for more slices of satisfying delights (:

Selera Rasa VS No.1 Adam Road
The Battle of the Adam Road Nasi Lemaks

2 long queues, side by side, will draw your attention as you take a walk through Adam Road Food Centre. Look closer and you will realise that both are serving the same food - Nasi Lemak. You will then have a sudden urge to join the crowd to see whats so good about their coconut rice, but which will you pick?

the only thing to do is to go for both and do a direct comparison, aspect by aspect..

Selera Rasa's Full House ($4)

No.1 Adam's Nasi Lemak's Adam's Special ($4.50, plus 50cents more for an extra otah= $5)

The visible differences:
1) No.1 Adam's was more crammed, with 2 extra slices of fishcake, roasted peanuts and a small portion of mutton rendang.
2) No.1 Adam's laid a piece of banana leaf as a base for the rice.
3) The colour of Selera Rasa's chicken wing was of a much nicer golden brown hue.

Digging in;

Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak
Rice: Full marks for their soft grains of warm basmati rice. Mildly fragrant and lightly lemak, you can take consecutive mouthfuls without having any coconut overkill. A wow factor.

Chicken Wing: Its probably the best hue of golden brown you can every achieve in deepfried chicken wings. Its suprising how every piece of this can consistently be of this beautiful colour. The skin is wonderfully fried to a light crisp. The chicken is quite bland though.

Otah: This is one of the only disappointing part, where its dry and average tasting. Nothing special about it.

Egg: The yolk here is cooked for long until it solidifies, but it is rather greasy.

Ikan Billis: Completely crunchy, nothing to complain about.

Chilli Sauce: Another wow factor. It is sweet initially as you taste it, but slowly emaciates a strong spicyness in your mouth. Fragrant and thrilling enough.

No. 1 Adam's Nasi Lemak
Rice: Not moist enough, drier and less fluffed up than Selera's. Coconut taste was not exactly sufficient as well.

Chicken Wing: Looks greasier and not as well-fried but its more tasty.

Otah:Their most distinct wow factor. Its super soft, moist and comes with an unique spice taste. A definite victory over Selera's otah.

Egg: A pretty circular shape, but with a runny yolk. Also greasy.

Chilli Sauce: Certainly more oily looking, and of a darker shade. No match for Selera's.

Overall: My final pick will still be Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak - the rice and chilli is simply enough to win me over. Thumbs up! But since opinions differ, its best to try both personally. No matter what, Adam Road is a good place to be when a nasi lemak craving hits.
Ichiban Boshi
Sushi and so much more.
- Esplanade Mall #02-14

Because of a loyalty reward card system, this became my family's usual dining place for Japanese Cuisine.Being fond of Japanese food as a family, we always have a particular restaurant in which we frequent regularly for a period of time. This used to be it, but now it seems to be alternating between here and Sushi Tei.

Opened by the same management of Fiesta, Kuishin-Bo and Kuriya, you can expect good quality food here, plus a range of interesting choices not found elsewhere. The ambience of the restaurant is cool, with a modern classy presentation and nice cushion seats. I liked the plates and bowls used here, and they even have their own specially designed sushi plates.

Shall introduce some of the dishes we had during our latest visit;

Crispy Lobster Salad Roll ($1.90)

This is my sister's all-time favourite. A plain maki deepfried in tempura batter, then topped with fresh lobster salad and spring onions.

Unagi Nigiri ($1.90)

Cold unagi lightly smeared with unagi sauce on sushi rice.

Unatama Crepe ($1.90)

Something really unique, with crepe replacing the usual seaweed used. The crepe gives it an entirely different feeling, wrapped around sushi rice, unagi, carrots and japanese egg.

Nama Hotate Avocado ($1.90)
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Fresh raw scallops, avocado bits and fish roe in light Japanese mayo.

California Temaki ($1.90)

A basic dish served in almost every Japanese restaurant, but the ingredients used here are in generously big slabs.

Chawanmushi ($3.90)

This was dad's order so i did not try it, but it seemed to be quite watery.

Mini Cha Soba ($1.90)

The portion is just right for me to get my soba-fix, alongside with all my other sushi orders. The soba used to be good, but this time round it was too hard and unbitable.

Agedashi Tofu ($4.90)

Another really basic dish in Japanese food, but their crust is able to maintain its crispiness, and without the oily aftertaste. well fried.

Saba Shioyaki ($8.90)

Me and mum's favourite fish. We eat in plain and simple, in shio style and a squueze of lemon juice, no extra sauces needed for us to gobble up this fish (:

Salmon Shioyaki ($9.90)

It was listed as Salmon Teriyaki on the menu, but dad made a special request to have it in shio style instead. Served with a small side salad with a light and tasty sesame dressing.

Overall: I was rather disappointed with the Cha Soba actually. Nevertheless, i have to commend them for the general consistent standard, plus the constant creativity of adding new items into the menu. Set Lunches and dinner are also available, but are all periodical and varies from branch to branch. The sushis here are seriously a steal and a must-have!

N.Y.D.C
-Wheelock Place #02-19
http://www.nydc.com.sg/

Its the first time i'm having my main course here, cause the previous visits are solely for the desserts (yes, they have the best apple crumble!) An american style cafe with a dog named 'Boney' as their main mascot. Found the menu very interesting, with creative dishes' names like Tears in Heaven, Romeo & Juliet, Destiny's Child etc. The entire layout and illustration is kind of kiddish but really cute.

Mushroom Madness Pizza ($13.95 -7 inch)
"Max's famous recipe! Lots of fresh mushrooms with garlic sauce and mozzarella. Named "Best Pizza in Singapore" by the Straits Times"

Truthfully, i did not agree about the last part of their description. The breadcrust was rather thin and came burnt at its sides. Fresh button mushrooms were used, and it turned too dry after baking. The garlic sauce was a little over-peppery, covering the taste of garlic.

Roast Chicken & Grilled Peppers Baked Penne ($10.90)
"With shredded roast chicken, grilled peppers and onions, plus mozzarella in n.y.d.c garlic sauce"

For all of their oven-baked specialties, a choice of rice or ziti pasta was given. This dish was nice! The entire combination of ingredients were good; penne in savoury garlic sauce plus those chicken shreds and mozarella cheese. Yummy~ The decision to take Pasta instead of rice was probably a right one, cause having rice in sauce can easily make you sick of it.

Overall: The baked pasta was superb, but the pizza was overrated. Worth returning to give the 'Baked Specialties' items and pastas a try! Fast service as well.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
-Parkway Parade, Wheelock Place

This is like my childhood breakfast place. I can clearly remember the times when daddy and me have our breakfast at the funan branch every weekend without fail. I grew up drinking 'Sunrise' with loads of whipped cream and eating their banana walnut muffin. Unfortunately for me, i can no longer reminisce the old times cause the Funan branch had sadly closed down and they do not serve banana walnut muffin anymore!

Was at parkway parade the other day and decided to have my lunch here. The breakfast sets are available all they and they also have a proper lunch menu for more selections.

Food for Thought ($6, with an English Breakfast Tea)

As it was a late lunch, i opted for something lighter. 4 squares of lightly toasted bread, 2 semi-cooked eggs and a side of cranberry salad. The toast tasted average but was not toasted well enough. I liked the eggs, simple and cooked just right for me. The cranberry salad even had almond flakes in it.

On a separate occasion, i tried a cheesecake from the wheelock place outdoor outlet.

Raspberry Christmas Cheesecake ($5)

Its been long since i had their cheesecakes, but in my impression it was supposed to be of good standards. I suppose this was a seasonal item, only available for the christmas period. I felt it was not exactly well-done in the texture, over-soft and not firm enough. The taste was okay but slightly too sweet, plus the raspberries were super sour. My high expectations for it made it rather disappointing.

Overall: I guess i would have their Chicago cheesecake instead on my next visit. Would definitely return for more of their hearty and nutritional breakfast sets (: The pricing here is considered reasonable for a coffee house and i strongly recommend the Sunrise Iceblended!
Thunder Tea Rice
An unbelievable healthfood
-Food Republic @ Vivocity

I was pondering between this or a bibimbap from the korean stall but still chose to have this. It was partially because this seemed to be a form of 'healthfood' and i was getting a little sick of korean food after my trip. This is my second time patronising, and there were no change in taste at all.

Thunder Tea Brown Rice ($4.50)

Brown rice made this 'healthfood' a step healthier, but it cost me 50cents more to opt for the switch. Definitely no regrets for that because their brown rice was not too dry nor with any strong smell of wholegrains. However, i would certainly not take a second sip from that watery greenish thunder tea. Even though it was diluted with water, the weird minty taste still remained as unbearable as ever. Made up of groundnuts, sesame seeds, green tea leaves, mint leaves, basil leaves, Chinese parsley, coriander leaves, Mugwort and Fuliksum, i knew it was beneficial in some ways but i would rather not torture myself to finish it.

The standard toppings comprises of roasted peanuts, crispy anchovies, beancurd cubes, cabbage shreds, longbeans & wingedbeans bits, chopped choy sum and a kind of floss. Many would love to mix it up and get crunchiness with every mouthful of rice, and i was no exception.

Overall: According to them, the dish is said to enhance slimming, detoxify the body, prevent fatigue, promote vitality, improve body functions, ease digestion & chronic bronchitis, prevent hypertension & hardening of the arteries, inhibits cancer cell growth, helps treat diabetes, enhance relaxtion and improves good sleep. they must be kidding me! Its like some form of miraculous medicine, hard to believe uh? but i guess even if those claims were true, one has to comsume it on a long-term regular basis for any effect to take place. Still, not bad for a healthier meal choice.

Faber Rock
-The Jewel Box @ 109 Mt Faber Road

Right at the top of the peak, Faber Rock is an alfresco style bar which offers a beautiful view of sentosa. The atmosphere here is great, nicley lit with dazzling decorative blue lights and christmas songs being played. A small orange lamp was placed on each table, and the entire layout was pretty. Both western and local fares were available on the menu, but the choices were rather limited.

Coke ($5) & Hot Green Tea ($5.50)

Old Fashioned Fish & Chips ($22)
"battered fillet-of-fish, french-fries, salad and tartar sauce"

The fish was very thick, and was fresh without any fishy taste. Codfish was used instead of the commonly-used dory fillet. It wasn't entirely crispy, only at the sides while the middle portions of the crust was soft. The fries was just average and not too crispy as well.

Seafood Ragout ($30)
"mussels, prawns, scallops and salmon served with lobster sauce, young vegetables and roasted potatoes"

Every piece of seafood here was extremely fresh, but i especially love the 2 pieces of thick succulent scallops. There were also 2 huge mussels, 1 juicy prawn, a salmon and a codfish slab. my only grouse was that the lobster sauce was slightly too bland.

Drums ang Wings ($9)
"chicken drumlets and stuffed boneless wings with sambal sauce"

The drumlets were breaded then deepfried, just like those in KFC. The boneless wings were much more special, with little chicken meat to savour but instead loaded with glutinous rice.

Baked Apple Crumble ($9)

By the time it was served, the scoop of vanilla icecream had already started melting. The crumble was not warmed up but matched well with the chilly icecream. The whole crumble was too fragile and soft, and easily makes you sick of it.

Assorted Cheese Cakes ($9)

The four flavours included original, coffee marble, oreo and blueberry. The plain one had a very strong cheese taste which may be too much for some but was still bearable for me. Still slightly frozen when served, it considered satisfying enough.

Overall: Basically a good dining experience with a comfy atmosphere but the problem lies in the transport. Pricewise obviously kind of expensive, but this is in exchange for the efforts spent and the quality of each dish.
i'm gonna start posting more informal and casual entries bout my beloved food(s).

Roma's Cuisine
- Blk 163 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, #01-428
http://www.romascuisine.com/

Just a small shop at a corner of an HDB block, but it serves a wide range of both western and eastern vegetarian food. Interesting items include the baked rice, pizzas, spaghettis, italian herb bread and all sorts of puff pastrys. Whats more, it is all pure vegetarian dishes without garlic, onions and eggs.

Cream of Mushroom Soup ($1.50)

This soup is seriously good! Thick enough, tasty, creamy and had a reasonable amout of fresh mushroom slices in it. Definitely not the canned kind, plus the cheap price made it even more worth trying. I must also comment that this is much better that many restaurant's mushroom soups.

Vegetarian Chicken & Mushroom Baked Rice ($4)

Another absolutely value for money choice.

The rice was well seasoned in a light cream base, and tasted extra nice with the herbs sprinkled on it. The cheese was not too much to make you feel sick of it, and there were also broccoli bits & carrot slices in the rice. However, i felt it was a little too oily as they oiled the base of the dish before baking it.

8 Treasure Brownrice Porridge ($2.50)

This was okay, with chunks of carrots, potatoes and stuffs. Great for the health-conscious as it was a little bland.

Overall: Variety is definitely a hit with the vegetarians around the area, and can also attract many non-vegetarians as well. The western cuisine is really up to standard at affordable prices. However, there are only limited seats available.

Wham! Burger
- China Square Food Centre #B1-22

This is a much talked-about burger stall in the makansutra forums and it was once featured on the Today newspaper. There were only 3 burgers to choose from, namely the beef, chicken and crispy fish.

Chicken Wham!burger ($4.80)

Lots of lettuce was given, so much that most of it had fallen out of the burger. The soft bun was thick, and rather fluffy.

The thick chicken thigh meat is marinated in a satay marinade, making it rather savoury. However, most parts were slightly too burnt and dry.

Crispy Fish Wham!burger ($4.80)

A slab of fresh breaded fish deepfried to a nice golden brown colour, with a dollop of tartar sauce.

Overall: The chicken burger i tried was although special (due to the satay sauce) but was not exactly fascinating. For the same price, i would prefer superdog's chicken burger.

Japanese Cuisine
- Hougang Mall Food Court

A brightly lit signboard drew my attention, and then i realised it was selling Japanese Bentos. Having a strong liking for Japanese food, i immediately made up my mind to try it. Was quite disappointed to know that they do not serve saba and that the salmon was deepfried, but i still had a grilled unagi in the end.

Unagi Bento Set ($5.90, with miso soup)

Basically the unagi here is pregrilled with the sauce, then microwaved when ordered. When i saw that, i lowered my expectations of it. But, the unagi still turned out to be pretty delicious.

Its really soft, smooth and tender, creating a slight melt-in-your-mouth effect. The thick sauce coated on it tasted great while not oversweet.

Plus, the rice was warmed and nicely fluffed and the miso soup even had fresh tofu cubes in it.

Overall: For $5.90, there shouldn't be anything else to complain about because a decent unagi elsewhere will cos you at least $7. But, it would be much better if they can serve freshly-grilled unagi instead.

Mr Sushi
- Takashimaya Basement Food Hall

Walking past here will make you stop for a second look, or rather, it made me do so. It may seem like just a small humble stall, but you get value-for-money authentic japanese food here. Opened by a true-blue Japanese businessman, the japanese chef here heartily whips up appetising japanese sets.

Saba(Mackerel) Set ($6.50 with a cup of free green tea)
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
A thick slab of saba fish, pickles, warm bowl of rice and a bowl of seafood miso soup.

The saba was nicely grilled, but with bones. It is also accompanied by a small portion of salad topped with japanese mayonnaise.

Something i had to rave about is the seafood miso soup. It was especially well-done and unlike those you find elsewhere. Home-cooked to a sweet-tasting broth, you can find bits of prawns, salmon, fish, red & white carrots as well as a kind of japanese jelly in it. An individual bowl of it will cost you $3 but i believe it is worth it.

Salmon Teriyaki Set ($9.90 with a cup of free green tea)
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Sides are the same, but with salmon instead.

The salmon, small but really thick and fresh. I hate it when some places overcook the salmon until it turns too dry, but the one here is still moist.

Overall: Good food at cheap rates, plus commendable service. The only problem is the limited seats available, and it does get packed during mealtimes. Many other varieties to choose from like unagi, codfish and ika, and they do sell ready-packed sushi sets for takeouts as well.
